Fiberglass Pools

SunQest has been selling fiberglass pools for decades. Our first was a Tallman (also known as Custom Fiberglass) 32 years ago. Since then we acquired dealerships for San Juan, Sunpools, and Alaglas. Customers can choose between the vast array of models and features. We have everything from small 12’ patio pools to 44’ long, 8’ deep diving pools. We have party pools with built-in benches and pool/spa combinations (not my favorite), game pools with a depth of 5’ in the middle and 3’ on each end. We even offer vanishing edge pools when the view dictates.

Automatic covers are a great option if the pool will be heated or if there’s a lot of trees around. Rectangular pools allow the associated tracks to be hidden under the coping. Free-form models require the track to be deck mounted but aren’t too bad. They don’t present a trip hazard and can be colored to match the deck.

Decking can be as simple as a 2’ perimeter concrete deck or more elaborate with stone-type coverings where travertine has been a favorite.

Lighting is typically low voltage colored LED for safety and brightness. Waterfalls and deck jets can be illuminated and synchronized with the underwater lights.

Greg’s Thoughts on Pool Shape

I don’t like 8’ deep pools that are less then 40’ long. The shallow “play area” is just too short before the step ramp to 8’ starts. The San Juan “Luxor Deep” is one of my favorite 8’ diving pools. At 44’ long there’s plenty of play area and the entry steps on the shallow end are broken up to provide an impressive 43’ or so swim lane.

Constant slope models seem to make the most sense. People know when to stop and the slopes are gradual and safe.

Game pools are great for the active family. Stretch the volleyball net across the middle, taller people at the net.

I’m not a fan of combination pool-spa models if the customer intends to use the spa year-round. The problem is the heating. Combination models share the same uninsulated plumbing and filter. The associated heat loss makes the spa section impractical to keep at the desired temperature when it’s cold outside. Powerful heaters can bring the spa, plumbing, and filter up to temperature for the 20 minutes or so of use, but then the energy would be lost as it’s left to cool down. Stand-alone spas like the Calspa line we represent are self-contained, well insulated and can be kept at the desired temperature. They can be set beside the pool and if desired, even made to look like they’re overflowing into the pool but keeping the waters separate. From experience, spas placed closer to the back door get used a lot more often in the winter.
